My 6 Quirks

8/5/2008 at 4:50:23 PM

Sorry it has been so long since I've posted here. This happy wife has been "happy mommy" blogging instead. However, since Kat "tagged" me on her blog...I thought I'd take a minute to share 6 of my many quirks...now all I have to do is narrow it down to six :-)

1.) The oddest of all - I actually fold and color coordinate my underwear drawer. There are even special bins for each category. This falls in line with my color and season coordinated closet...and MY clothes are all on BLACK hangers...David has his own closet with all the mismatched hangers.  Although I must admit, after becoming a mom, this strange quirk has become less frequent :-)

2.) When I look at David, I look at his lips...not his eyes...his lips! Don't worry though, it's just something I do with him...or at least he's the only one I've noticed I've done it to. If there are others of you out there...I'm sorry, I swear I'm not trying to be that creepy!

3.) I like younger kids. That in and of itself (I hear) is craziness. Most people can't wait to get past that stage. I, on the other hand don't know what to do with or how to relate with kids above 4th grade. That, and many times I prefer kids over adults...weird I know! All that chaos...I LOVE it!

4.) OK...so everything has a spot in my house! I love having help...but usually I end up re-doing what the "helper" has done...it drives my husband crazy because of the added work I put on myself. I'm constantly re-doing, re-organizing...it's craziness!

5.) A messy house will actually affect/effect (never could get those two right) my mood. Yes, as dumb as that is...if there is a messy room...usually the office, I have to move to a clean room...if they're all messy...watch out! I go nuts...and what is even crazier is that I will mentally pick everything up in my mind, but be too overwhelmed to do much more. At least if I have a clean room to go to I can regroup and begin to make a plan of action.

6.) Things have to be even, not crooked, and/or spaced correctly. If something is off I HAVE to fix it before I can continue. It's horrible. I do it when I'm having a conversation. I do it in my own house, and what is even scarier is that I do it in other people's houses too! I've also been known to notice dust or crumbs and start cleaning that up too.

**Disclaimer** I don't want you to get the wrong idea. I will be honest and tell you that I am not a clean freak practically speaking...my house at this moment is a mess (and yes it's making me moody)! Nonetheless, these are my quirks, and I'm blogging about them instead of cleaning (that should tell you something)...I prefer things this way, but practically speaking...with a new baby, company for 6 weeks, fun trips, etc...let's just say life happens and I'm learning to go with it!

BTW - I hope you are all having a spectacular summer! Keep up with www.larsenkids.com for our summer happenings!

Ok tag time... I tag Michelle Edwards, Crystal Lazenby, Megan Camp, Jamie Millett, Sara Wallace, Ashleigh Hampton and anyone else who reads this blog. If you don't have your own blog to post it on...go ahead and post it as a comment here. Come on...it will be fun!

So what exactly is a "quirk"?

quirk n. A peculiarity of behavior; an idiosyncrasy:

“Every man had his own quirks and twists” (Harriet Beecher Stowe)

Your #1 Is fun since the definition of underwear is that it is under clothes so most folks shouldn't be seeing them anyway. So why do women give regard to color, if they are "hidden" anyway? We're all quirky? As you get busier with Evelyn you'll probably be letting a few of these time consuming quirks "go". My undewear quirk is....

I NEVER fold mine. Why bother?

More on this subject later. Gotta run to SF...

Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit...

YEAH!

Good points...however, that may be why it's a quirk. When you ask "why bother?" I squirm...I bother because it looks nice and organized. I need the order. It actually makes me somewhat happy to be able to look into my closets and drawers and to see order. I ALWAYS start with the drawers and closets. Even my messiness in the closet has an order to it. When I don't have time there is a spot I hang clothes in the closet, they're usually the clothes I wear the most, so they barely make it to be "put away" anyhow, but it still looks nice. Once that gets full I start putting them in their proper space...it's most certainly quirky. I mean...if my clothes are all jumbled and messy on different hangers next to random things...I'd NEVER find what I'm looking for. I guess part of my philosophy (how I reason this quirk in my head) is spend the time now (and trust me it's not long) and save the time later when I'm looking for something. Then I also realize how many clothes I don't need, because they stay in their same spot. But if the long sleeved sweaters were with the short sleeved...it would just be too overwhelming for me to get dressed. Ohhh...how I can't stand a messy closet! For me, everything has to have a spot. It makes cleaning more efficient and actually helps me keep it that way. See? We all have different quirks. That's funny because today is my day to re-organize, and part of my solution (after thinking about it all week) was not not to do these things with more Evelyn time, but to come up with a better more efficient solution. I think I'll hit the home-ec books again! :-)

Gwen,

I think my first step to "recovery" will be to not "re-do" what others have done. That in and of itself will be a HUGE step! P.S. I hope you can read the sarcasm amongst the truth in what I wrote above.

I like your insight. I bet David considers your necessity/quirk for orderliness to be a huge blessing. More orderliness on my part would circumvent the EXTREME frustrarion I feel when I cannot find things. AHHHHH!

Your current plan seems to be quite efficient, except re-doing things already done...unless "it" was not done "properly." I see only one advantage to disorderliness..in your teen's room...you can read their "life story", see their interests, know what they've been up to. Possibly a window to their soul.

I really think an orderly life and home honors God and blesses man/Tim, anyway...I continue to work on my "weakness."

Re:your quirk #2. Makes me want to notice David's lips.

Re: quirk #3. I used to feel most comfortable with younger kids only, until I had younger kids who gradually grew up to be middle kids, then older kids. It just snuck up in me. I love kids of all ages, esp. my six and their four.

P.S Why black hangers?

P.S.S.I must go back to straightening my desk.
